Best Selling Non-Slip Bath Mat: Rubbermaid Commercial FG704104WHT Rubber Safti-Grip Bath Mat, Large, WhiteNon-slip bathtub mats are an absolute must in any bathroom that a senior citizen uses. We had two bathtub mats available for Mom’s use as one was almost always in the washer (they can get moldy if not picked up after bath use, and we almost always forgot that step….).
Note: if you’re looking for the very best tub mat on the market, just buy that one on the left. It’s the #1 seller for a good reason – it works. Reviewers love this particular bathtub mat and, let’s face it, anything made by Rubbermaid is always a good bet.
Non-slip bathtub mat requirements
When purchasing a non-slip bath mat, make sure you know what size you’re getting. I made the mistake of buying a nice bathmat online without seeing it and the thing was just teeny! It was sent right back the very next day as it was fairly useless. Even worse, it would have given us a false sense of security if it doesn’t fit the tub properly. Most bath mats come in various sizes so measure your bathtub or shower and order the larges non-slip bath mat that will fit the area.
There are now bath mats that look like they’re made of pebbles or, even prettier to my eye, green leaves. I do not recommend these types of suction bath mats for a senior citizen as senior feet are more likely to get tripped up in the empty spaces of these very pretty bath mats. For you? Fine. For your parents or grandparents? Stick with a solid surface bath mat.
Care of non-slip bathtub mats
Once your senior citizen friend is down showering or bathing, make sure to pick the mat up and, once the water drains from the tub, you can put the bathmat back in upside down. This will allow the suction cups to dry thoroughly which prevents mold and mildew from growing on the mat. If mold does build up, just use a soft bristle scrub brush and a slightly abrasive cleaner like
Bon Ami to clean the bathmat.
Most bathtub mats today are also machine washable so it’s a good plan to throw your bath mat in the washer once a week or so. And, there are even bathmats on the market today that are a permanent addition to a tub or shower. These type of bathtub mats are a one time installation; some have cut out for the drain of the tub or shower. You wouldn’t ever have to worry about this type of bath mat moving or growing mold.
