Induction Cooktops Reduce The Chance Of Fire And Burns In The Kitchen
I know that, when my parents were still living alone, I worried about them leaving the stove on when they were finished cooking. But, at the same time, I certainly appreciated knowing that they were still eating home cooked meals and not out in a restaurant every day.
Mom cooked all the way up until she was 90 when she moved in with me after Dad died. Their gas stove always gave me pause though; I’d even call after dinner to make sure it was off. Most of the time, it was, but, then again, there were those rare times when I think my phone call may have avoided a disaster.
A good induction cooktop would have really been a great present for my own senior citizens. If you’re not familiar with these newfangled cooktops, an induction cooktop works with only certain pans – pans with iron in them (cast iron works beautifully). The pan gets as hot as it would on a stove but the induction cooktop remains cool to the touch (Note: the center will get warm but generally not warm enough to burn a hand).
The NuWave Precision Induction Cooktop you see there on the left above is the best seller on Amazon.com and for good reason. Once the pan is removed from the surface, it actually turns itself off! No worries at all about burns from a hot stovetop or fire. It can be set for as little as 100F all the way to 550F (for searing those tender steaks).
Note: Metal pans are a must when using an induction cooktops; if the pots and pans are not metal, they simply will not work. To check if your Grandma or Grandpa’s favorite pans will work, touch them with a magnet. If it sticks, you’re good to go. If not, see further down in this article for induction cooktop friendly pans.
It’s best to make sure that there is a dedicated outlet for the induction cooktop – you don’t want to overload an outlet or pop a circuit breaker when it’s being used.
Another nice thing about an induction cooktop is that they can be used anywhere there is an electrical outlet. They’re great for those in wheelchairs as the cooktop can be placed on a low table so it’s easier to reach.

Induction Cooking Pots And Pans
As I mentioned, pans designed for induction cooking must have iron in them. Run a magnet over any cookware – if it sticks, use that cookware!
